How to Use Texas Skies Overlays & Actions

The Texas Skies Overlays & Actions have been released.

The fantastic thing about these overlays is that they are extremely flexible to be edited just how you want them!

When you download your files, the Actions should download pretty quickly because it’s a small file, but the Overlay files will take longer because they are much larger.

Note: You do NOT need to install the Overlays. Just make sure you have the files saved somewhere on your computer where you can find them and they won’t get deleted. You will use the Actions provided to import the Sky Overlay image of your choosing as a Layer onto your original photo.

INSTALLING INSTRUCTIONS PHOTOSHOP USERS

1. Install OSP Texas Skies Actions (see OSP Installing Manual included in your download).

2. Open the image you want to edit to have a different sky.

3. Open your Actions Palette. [Window>Actions]

There are two actions you can choose from to put the Overlay on your original image.

Option 1

A. Play the action Quick sky mask. Use the dialogue box to navigate to the Oh So Posh Texas Skies image you want to use as your Overlay. (It may be helpful to have Bridge open to the collection so you can see all the available choices.)

B. The Overlay will be placed as a Layer on top of your image. Resize and move the sky image as needed.

Tip: In your Layers Palette, change the Blending Mode of your sky image from Normal to Multiply so you can see the original photo beneath the sky image layer. Hit enter or double click to apply your changes. The Blending Mode should automatically revert to Normal.

C. The action will instruct you to paint where you do not want the image to show. Use a BLACK brush at 100% opacity and set the hardness at less than 50%. You may need to spend some time here getting clean edges if your clouds overlap people or important details. You can change the hardness of the brush as needed to achieve results to your liking.

Your Layers Palette should show two layers, the original image as the Background layer, and your Sky Overlay with a Quick Mask. The mask will have black and white on it: the white is where the Overlay shows and the clouds cover your photo, and the black is where you painted over the Overlay so it does not show (your original image is what shows).

Option 2

This option is best if you have a clean separation between sky and the rest of the image, and the sky can easily be selected with the Quick Selection Tool or Magic Wand Tool.

A. Play the action Place sky over the picture. Use the dialogue box to navigate to the Oh So Posh Texas Skies image you want to use as your overlay. Click Place.

B. Resize and move the sky image as needed using the same procedure as in Option 1.

C. The action will instruct you to select the part of your sky you want to replace. Use the Quick Selection Tool or Magic Wand Tool. Take your time so you don’t accidentally select something that isn’t sky.

D. Click Play in the Actions Palette to continue the action. You will be asked to enter a Feather Radius (the default is 15). Allow the action to play.

Your Layers Palette will look something like this.

If you need to clean up the transition from original image to Overlay so that nothing has a halo, select the Mask and paint black where you do not want the Overlay to show and white where you do want it to show. Adjust your brush opacity and hardness as needed.

If you like the way the image looks here, you can stop editing and save the file. Or you can use the other Texas Skies Actions to adjust the Sky Overlay to your liking. This is where the flexibility of the collection comes into play — there are so many ways you can alter the sky to create a unique image! Play around and have fun.

INSTALLING INSTRUCTIONS ELEMENTS USERS

1. Install OSP Texas Skies Actions (see OSP Installing Manual).

You do not need to install the overlays. You will work with them as a layer in the photo you want to edit. These instructions will tell you how to add the Sky Overlay to your original image.

2. Open the image you want to edit.

3. Make sure you are in Expert mode. Open your Effects Palette. Click on the dropdown menu and select OSP Texas Skies Actions.

There are two actions you can choose from to put the Overlay on your original image.

Option 1

A. Double click the action Quick mask. Use the dialogue box to navigate to the OSP sky image you want to use as your overlay.

B. Resize and move the sky image as needed. [Tip: In your Layers Palette, change the Blending Mode of your sky image from Normal to Multiply so you can see the original photo beneath the sky image layer. Try to make sure only clouds are showing above the horizon line in your photo.] Hit enter or double click to apply your changes.

C. The action will instruct you to paint where you do not want the image to show. Use a black brush at 100% opacity and set the hardness at less than 50%. You may need to spend some time here getting clean edges if your clouds overlap people. You don’t want them to have a halo.

Your Layers Palette should show two layers, the original image as the Background layer, and your Sky Overlay with a Quick Mask. The mask will have black and white on it: the white is where the Overlay shows and the clouds cover your photo, and the black is where you painted over the Overlay so it does not show.

Option 2

This option is best if you have a clean separation between sky and the rest of the image, and the sky can easily be selected with the Quick Selection Tool or Magic Wand Tool.

A. Double click the action Place sky. Use the dialogue box to navigate to the OSP sky image you want to use as your overlay. Click Place.

B. Resize and move the sky image as needed using the same procedure as in Option 1.

C. The action will instruct you to select the part of your sky you want to replace. Use the Quick Selection Tool. Take your time so you don’t accidentally select something that isn’t sky.

D. Double click the action Create mask. Follow the instructions to soften the line between sky and non-sky.

If you need to clean up the transition from original image to Overlay, select the Mask and paint black where you do not want the Overalay to show and white where you do want it to show. Adjust your brush opacity and hardness as needed.

If you like the way the image looks here, you can stop editing and save the file. Or you can use the actions to adjust the Sky Overlay to your liking.

Hi,

I purchased the Texas Sky Overlays, but when I try to add them to my actions or effects set in PSE, the actions are not available. I have tried downloading, uninstalling and installing a second and third time, but they are not available. There seems to be an issue with the set I purchased.

Please email to help or refund. Thank you.

To those who cannot find the files in their zip file – I think you are looking at the actions zip file. There are two files to download. One downloads quickly and is a zip file containing helpful actions. The second file takes a long time to download (over an hour) and contains all the images. An action cannot contain an image. You have to download the sky images, put them on your computer, then use the provided actions to import them to photoshop and adapt them to your photo.
